Improving and Stabilizing the racoon2 IKE Daemon in NetBSD

Google Summer of Code 2026 project modernizes NetBSD's racoon2 IKE daemon with proper NAT traversal for IKEv1/IKEv2, IPv6 support, and an automated unit test framework. The improvements enable reliable VPN server functionality for modern clients without workaround selectors. All changes were merged upstream through pull requests #13–#39 between June and September 2026.

Background

The racoon2 project is a key component for IPsec VPN functionality in NetBSD and Linux, being modernized to support built-in VPN clients across Windows, iOS and Android platforms. This GSoC report details the culmination of student work to resolve long-standing TODO items in the daemon.
