A Terminal Protocol for Program Status (OSC 7501)

Mitchell Hashimoto proposes OSC 7501, a new terminal escape sequence protocol that lets programs report their operational status (idle, working, blocked, finished, failed) and reasons to the terminal. The protocol emerged from work on Superlogical and Ghostty terminals and is designed as a generic, terminal-native specification for long-running tasks like builds, deployments, and coding agents.

Background

Mitchell Hashimoto is the creator of Terraform, Vagrant, and Vault. This proposal builds on his experience with terminal-based tooling and addresses the growing need for better program status communication in terminals as coding agents and long-running CLI tools become more prevalent.
