It looks like the Atlantic storm season may finally produce a hurricane

A low-pressure system in the western Gulf of Mexico is expected to develop into Tropical Storm Isaias and possibly a hurricane, which would be notable as the latest-forming hurricane of the Atlantic season on record. The current Atlantic season has been the quietest to date, largely due to a strengthening historically strong El Niño causing high wind shear over the tropics. With most hurricanes forming between mid-August and mid-October, the window for this season is closing.

Background

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with peak activity between mid-August and mid-October. El Niño events typically suppress Atlantic hurricane formation by increasing wind shear, and this year's historically strong El Niño has made it the quietest season on record.
