Batteries are now cheaper than natural gas turbines used at many data centers

According to a Wood Mackenzie report, battery storage is now cheaper than open-cycle natural gas turbines across all 43 surveyed global markets. The cost inversion is driven by surging AI data center demand that has created multi-year backlogs for gas turbines while battery costs continue to fall.

Background

Open-cycle gas turbines have long been a go-to backup and peaking power source for data centers, but AI-driven electricity demand has strained supply chains. Solar is already the cheapest new power source globally.
