Cloudflare acquires Deno to improve its Workers programming model

Cloudflare has acquired Deno, the runtime company co-founded by Node.js creator Ryan Dahl and Bert Belder, to strengthen its Workers programming model and edge computing platform. The acquisition comes as Deno recently launched celld, an open-source Workers implementation that impressed Cloudflare engineers. Cloudflare plans to integrate Deno into its platform rather than using it as a competitive lock-in strategy.

Background

Cloudflare Workers allows developers to run JavaScript/TypeScript code at the edge of Cloudflare's global network. Deno, founded in 2018, has gained traction as an alternative JavaScript runtime with built-in security features.
