Approximately 700 supermarkets across France were hit by a mass hack of their refrigeration systems, causing widespread food spoilage and electrical fires. Attackers exploited critical vulnerabilities in Internet-connected controllers from Danfoss, Dixell, and Copeland to remotely activate defrost cycles, pushing temperatures up to 50°C. These vulnerabilities, including daily predictable passwords and remote admin access flaws, had been known and patched but went unaddressed.
Background
IoT and industrial control systems in commercial settings increasingly face security challenges due to weak default credentials and delayed patching. Incidents like this highlight the real-world physical consequences when operational technology lacks basic cybersecurity protections.
