NATO may redeploy anti-drone defenses as attacks sink more Black Sea shipping

NATO is considering redeploying anti-drone defenses after a series of suspected drone attacks sank or damaged cargo ships in the Black Sea within NATO member countries' exclusive economic zones. Five ships have been attacked in these zones, including the Ukrainian-operated Chelsea 3 and the Dignity, which sank with 11 crew members missing. Bulgarian officials suspect Russian involvement, arguing the attacks benefit Moscow's interests.

Background

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has extensively used drones for maritime attacks in the Black Sea, targeting both military and commercial shipping. The Black Sea has become a critical theater for drone warfare since 2022, with repeated strikes on vessels disrupting global grain and goods trade routes.
