Package managers have an integrity problem

Trail of Bits tested 25 popular package managers and found that fewer than half use lockfiles with tamper-checking enabled by default, and only two verify the integrity of every downloaded package. The report warns that as supply-chain attacks targeting individual developers become harder, attackers will shift focus to compromised package repositories. Many implementations fall short due to design choices, resource constraints, or crypto complexity.

Background

Supply-chain attacks on software dependency ecosystems have grown significantly, with high-profile incidents like SolarWinds and npm package compromises drawing attention to the need for stronger integrity guarantees in package management tools.
