Schools across US protest FCC plan that could disconnect kids from Internet

Schools and libraries across the US are urging the FCC to scrap a proposal to eliminate or significantly restrict the E-Rate program, a $2 billion annual initiative that provides discounted telecom services and equipment to connect students and library visitors to the Internet. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr argues the program has expanded beyond its original purpose and has already scaled back funding for Wi-Fi hotspots and school bus connectivity.

Background

The E-Rate program, part of the Universal Service Fund established by the Telecommunications Act of 1996, has been a cornerstone of school and library connectivity for decades. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has led efforts to rein in programs he views as overreaching beyond their original intent.
