Ukraine’s drone rescue of wounded soldier puts much touted idea into practice

Ukraine has successfully performed a drone-based medical evacuation of a wounded soldier from a frontline area where ground rescue was impractical due to Russian drones and landmines. The operation used a Heavy Shot AYUDAG 6 hexacopter drone with a winch and harness system, marking a practical deployment of a concept the military has long pursued.

Background

The military has explored aerial casualty evacuation for decades, with the US and other nations conducting various tests. Ukraine's frontline experience has accelerated practical implementation beyond previous experimental phases.
