Enterprises keep buying software upgrades that IT thinks will make things worse

A survey of 2,018 enterprise IT leaders found that companies waste an average of 28% of their software budgets on unwanted upgrades, migrations, and licensing changes, often driven by vendor pressure. Ninety-five percent of respondents reported that their organization has paid for at least one vendor-driven upgrade they believed would reduce performance or business value, with over half making such purchases more than once. The report, commissioned by software maintenance provider Origina, highlights the near-zero leverage IT departments have when negotiating with major vendors.

Background

Enterprise software procurement and maintenance has long been a pain point for IT departments, with vendor lock-in and forced upgrade cycles cited as major budget drains. The software maintenance industry has grown as a counterbalance to vendor-dominated licensing models.
