Electronic Arts has shut down legendary RPG studio BioWare after over three decades, laying off 400 employees across the company with 50 at BioWare specifically. The next Mass Effect project has been canceled, marking the end of studios behind iconic franchises like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Background

BioWare was acquired by EA in 2007 and became one of the most respected RPG developers in the industry. EA itself was recently taken private in a $55 billion deal led by Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
