OpenAI makes its Jev competitor widely available as decision model competition heats up

OpenAI has made its Decisions API model widely available, directly competing with TypeSafe's Jev model in the emerging decision-model space. The API reconfigures ChatGPT Luna for faster inference—reducing response times from 1-3 seconds to 100-180 milliseconds—at dramatically lower cost. This marks OpenAI's aggressive entry into a market where System One-style models are proving far more efficient for classification and choice-based workflows than traditional LLMs.

Background

TypeSafe, founded by a former OpenAI researcher, achieved a $7.6 billion valuation with its Jev model, establishing a new category of fast, low-cost decision/classification models as alternatives to traditional LLMs. OpenAI had announced the Decisions API at its September 2026 developer day before rolling it out to all customers.
