A new emulation project called VBoy Color reimagines Nintendo's Virtual Boy with full-color display by using a tile-based palette system that assigns distinct four-color palettes to each 8×8 tile in Virtual Boy games. Building on the earlier Red Viper project, it enables games like Mario Clash and Teleroboxer to display objects in differentiated colors rather than the original monochrome red-on-black scheme.
Background
Nintendo's Virtual Boy, released in 1995, was a controversial early attempt at portable 3D gaming that used red LED displays and is widely considered one of Nintendo's most significant commercial failures. The project follows up on Red Viper, a 2025 emulator that added basic Super Game Boy-style color to Virtual Boy games.
