A developer has created a MacOS Extensions pack for the Apple Network Server v1.0, reviving the ability to boot Mac OS on Apple's 1996 Unix server line. The ANS originally shipped only with Harpoon (an AIX superset), but pre-production ROMs that supported Mac OS were later stripped from production systems. The author discovered they had a preproduction ROM and now shares a working extensions package based on dumped ROM images from a former Apple employee.
Background
The Apple Network Server (ANS) was a discontinued 1996 Unix workstation/server based on PowerPC architecture, running a variant of IBM AIX called Harpoon. It was cancelled after Steve Jobs returned to Apple and the machine became a collector's item among vintage computing enthusiasts.
