SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller

The author implemented a SIMD-accelerated FAST corner detector for the ESP32-S3, achieving roughly double the performance of the reference implementation at ~6ms per QVGA frame. The work also includes a custom register allocator called 'basm' and explores the relatively under-documented 128-bit SIMD instructions available on this low-cost chip.

Background

The ESP32-S3 is a popular dual-core 240MHz microcontroller with WiFi/BLE by Espressif, priced around $2-3, making it one of the most affordable development boards for edge AI and IoT projects.
