Type Server Protocol

Microsoft has published a specification for the Type Server Protocol (TSP), a standardized protocol enabling language servers to offload type-checking work to a dedicated background process. This separation allows editors to remain responsive while heavy type analysis runs in parallel, and could become an interoperable standard across different language server implementations.

Background

Language servers power IDE features like autocomplete and go-to-definition. Pylance has been building a separate type server architecture to handle expensive type checking without blocking the language server, and now it's being proposed as an open protocol.
