An Evening with Berferd: In Which a Cracker is Lured, Endured, and Studied (1992)

Berferd was one of the earliest honeypot systems, developed at Bell Labs in the early 1990s. This seminal paper describes its design as a deliberately vulnerable FTP server intended to lure, record, and study intruders' behavior in real time.

Background

Berferd was among the first honeypots, predating modern variants like Hive and SheepDip. This work laid the foundation for active deception as a legitimate cybersecurity defense strategy.
