Google begins certifying Registered App Stores for Android, but not in the US

Google has opened applications for its Registered App Stores program, allowing third-party app stores outside the US to apply for certification and preferential treatment on Android. Approved stores will enable single-click installs and silent background updates, mirroring the Play Store experience, though the program is not available in the US due to ongoing antitrust litigation.

Background

Google lost its appeal in the Epic Games antitrust case, which mandated significant changes to how Android handles third-party app distribution in the US. The Registered App Stores program was developed as an alternative framework for international markets.
