Grace Blackwell needs a new scheduler: 27% more usable GPUs from the same racks

SkyPilot addresses the GPU allocation inefficiency problem in NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVL72 systems by introducing a topology-aware scheduler that keeps multi-node jobs rack-local, achieving 27% more usable GPUs and 14% higher training throughput. The approach uses automatic defragmentation and in-place recovery from hardware failures to maximize the benefits of NVLink's unified rack-scale fabric.

Background

NVIDIA's NVL72 connects all 72 GPUs in a rack via NVLink, eliminating the need for InfiniBand inter-rack communication but requiring intelligent scheduling to maintain rack locality. SkyPilot is an open-source AI inference and training platform for cloud GPU clusters.
