Rivian’s autonomy gamble faces its first real test

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe is prioritizing the company's autonomous driving ambitions over R2 SUV production ramp during recent earnings calls. Rivian plans to roll out its point-to-point hands-free driving feature to employees in 2026 and customers in 2027, followed by a robotaxi launch in partnership with Uber in 2028.

Background

Rivian is an EV startup known for its R1T truck and R1S SUV, currently expanding into more affordable models like the R2. The company faces increasing competition in both the EV and autonomous driving spaces from established players and tech companies.
