Death comes for XSLT

Google has officially removed XSLT support from Chrome, with Chromium-based browsers following suit, marking November 17, 2026 as the deprecation date. The author criticizes this move as a violation of the web standards social contract and backwards compatibility principles that have long guided browser vendors.

Background

XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) has been a W3C standard since 1999, used for transforming XML documents into other formats like HTML. Google has been gradually reducing XSLT support in Chrome behind feature flags before fully removing it.
