A new filesystem for pidfds (2024)

Linux kernel developer Christian Brauner has proposed a new filesystem for pidfds to address limitations in the current anonymous-inode implementation. The new pidfdfs filesystem will provide better support for pidfd operations and is expected to be included in the Linux 6.9 kernel. This change demonstrates ongoing kernel improvements to process management and file descriptor handling.

Background

Pidfds (process ID file descriptors) are a Linux-specific mechanism that provides race-free references to processes, addressing limitations of traditional Unix process IDs. They were introduced to improve process management and security in the Linux kernel.
