A ratings board wouldn't let Valve release a trailer. It "leaked" it instead.

Valve orchestrated the 2009 leak of its Left 4 Dead 2 trailer to bypass ESRB marketing restrictions that banned graphic violence and gore in trailers. Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek confirmed the story 17 years later, revealing the controversial takedown was a deliberate workaround rather than an accidental leak.

Background

The ESRB has regulated game marketing materials since 1994, requiring publishers like Valve to submit trailers for approval before public release, particularly for retail shelf presence.
