Anthropic took down thousands of GitHub repos trying to yank its leaked source code — a move the company says was an accident

Anthropic accidentally caused the takedown of approximately 8,100 GitHub repositories while attempting to remove leaked source code for its Claude Code application. The company's copyright takedown notice affected legitimate forks of its own public repository, which they later acknowledged was an error. Anthropic retracted most notices, limiting the action to just one repository and 96 forks containing the actual leaked code.

Background

Anthropic is a leading AI company known for its Claude AI models, and GitHub is Microsoft's code hosting platform that uses automated systems to process copyright takedown requests.
