Cities terminate Flock contracts at record pace in August

A record 90 U.S. cities and counties terminated contracts with Flock Safety in August 2026, marking a fourfold increase from the previous month, according to data from the advocacy group Secure Justice. Concerns driving the cancellations include aggressive surveillance, unwanted data sharing, high costs, and reports of law enforcement misuse. Flock Safety responded that new city partnerships have outpaced cancellations roughly 10-to-1 in 2026.

Background

Flock Safety is a license plate reader and facial recognition camera company widely adopted by U.S. law enforcement agencies since the mid-2010s, raising ongoing privacy and civil liberties concerns.
