CoW is a stacking window manager for Wayland built on River, aiming to recreate the 90s FVWM/MWM aesthetic with modern capabilities. Currently at release 0.3 (September 2026), the next version 0.4 includes 22 merged changes covering command fixes, snapshot improvements, and font inheritance. It features IPC scripting, customizable decorations, native menus, and an internal DSL for window rules.
Background
Wayland is the modern display protocol replacing X11, and the Wayland ecosystem still lacks mature stacking window managers compared to tiling WMs like River. CoW fills this niche by providing a traditional stacked WM experience on Wayland.
