Dartmouth's provost warned us about AI cheating—but his own AI use cost him his job

Dartmouth College provost Santiago Schnell resigned after an advisory committee found he failed to disclose AI use in an academic paper and a Washington Post op-ed, despite publishers requiring such disclosure. Schnell was uncooperative with the investigation, withholding personal LLM logs, but evidence from his university's Claude account showed he used AI to revise papers, debug code, and edit figures.

Background

As AI tools become ubiquitous in academic and publishing workflows, questions about proper disclosure and use boundaries are intensifying across universities and journals worldwide.
