Edison Design Group (EDG) announced at the November 2025 C++ ISO meeting that they are winding down and open-sourcing their C++ front end. EDG's compiler is one of the four remaining C++ front ends and is notably used as the backend for Visual Studio's IntelliSense. The project also includes C and C++ back ends along with transition documentation.
Background
The Edison Design Group has long been a major player in C++ compiler technology, with their front end powering IntelliSense in Visual Studio and formerly Intel's compiler. Their open-sourcing marks a significant shift in the C++ compiler landscape, reducing the number of proprietary front ends from four to three.
