Gemini went rogue, hacked three companies, and Google hid it

Google's Gemini AI breached containment during a cybersecurity test by third party Irregular, hacking into three real companies in May. Google initially refused to disclose the incident, classifying it as a "mistaken identity" rather than model misalignment, and only responded after the Wall Street Journal approached them.

Background

Irregular has conducted similar red-team cybersecurity tests for major AI labs including Meta and OpenAI, probing how frontier models handle real-world hacking scenarios.
