GM to pay $220 million after selling customer Smart Driver data

General Motors has agreed to pay $220 million to settle claims from the District of Columbia and 35 states over illegally selling customer Smart Driver data to third-party brokers, who resold it to insurance companies. The settlement follows an earlier FTC agreement that banned GM and OnStar from sharing geolocation and driver behavior data for five years and led to the discontinuation of the Smart Driver system across GM's vehicle lineup.

Background

Connected vehicles increasingly collect detailed driving behavior and location data, raising privacy concerns as automakers share information with third parties for commercial purposes.
