GNOME Shell Design Dreams

GNOME's design team has published a long-term vision document outlining upcoming UI improvements for GNOME Shell. The most concrete near-term plan is a redesigned search interface that transitions to a semantic overlay spawning from the search entry, likely shipping in GNOME 51. Additional ideas include richer search results with file previews, multiple actions per result, and filters — though many require new APIs and application porting.

Background

GNOME Shell underwent a major redesign with GNOME 40's spatial navigation model, and the team continues to refine the experience in subsequent releases. The search interface has long been one of the last areas not fully aligned with this spatial model.
