Google ordered to put clearer links in AI search and let UK publishers opt out

UK regulators have ordered Google to implement clearer attribution and links to publisher content in its AI-generated search features, while also requiring the company to allow UK publishers to opt out of having their content used in AI search results. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) ruled that Google cannot penalize publishers who choose to opt out by downranking them in general search results, and the company has nine months to comply with these requirements. This marks the first major regulatory intervention regarding AI search features and publisher rights, potentially setting a precedent for other jurisdictions.

Background

Google's AI Overviews feature provides AI-generated summaries in search results, but has faced criticism for sometimes providing inaccurate information while potentially reducing traffic to original content sources. The UK's CMA has been investigating big tech companies' market power and their impact on competition.
