Google’s first data center satellite is online and writing poetry

Google's Suncatcher prototype space data center is now online after launching on a SpaceX Falcon 9, carrying four TPUs capable of up to 1 kW power generation. The satellite successfully ran Google DeepMind's Gemma 4 model, producing a space-themed haiku and reporting orbital conditions during initial tests. Future testing will evaluate chip performance under thermal stress and space radiation.

Background

Google is exploring on-orbit AI computing as a way to perform inference closer to data sources in space, potentially reducing latency and bandwidth requirements. This initiative is part of a broader trend of companies testing data center capabilities in the space environment.
