Googlebook review: Android on a laptop is still Android

Ars Technica reviews Google's new line of premium Android-powered laptops, called Googlebooks, positioned as alternatives to Windows and macOS. Despite high-end hardware with touchscreen displays, metal bodies, and biometric unlock, the devices still feel like giant phones or Chromebooks rather than true premium laptops. Googlebook OS offers some appealing features for Android phone users, but the challenge remains convincing users to switch from entrenched desktop ecosystems.

Background

Google has long attempted to extend Android beyond phones into tablets, Chromebooks, and foldables, but these efforts have had limited impact on mainstream computing. Googlebooks represent a push into the premium laptop segment, directly competing with established Windows and macOS ecosystems.
