Hacking the Go compiler to efficiently map IPv4 to IPv6

The author explores how to make the Go compiler efficiently optimize IPv4-to-IPv6 address mapping in netip.Addr, which currently compiles to code eight times slower than a native method. They analyze multiple implementation paths—modifying the standard library, adding a helper function, or using unsafe—and demonstrate compiler-level optimizations through assembly analysis.

Background

Go's netip package, introduced in Go 1.17, provides efficient IP address handling. IPv4-mapped IPv6 addresses (::ffff:x.x.x.x) are a standard way to represent IPv4 addresses within IPv6-only codepaths.
