Mozilla posted an intent to ship JPEG XL in Firefox, with Chrome also planning support and Safari already having a partial implementation. The format was implemented in Rust via Google Research's jxl-rs library after Firefox previously had concerns about the security attack surface of the original C++ decoder. JPEG XL supports progressive rendering, allowing images to appear as they download, and will join AVIF as a second modern image format in browsers by end of year.
