Internal files add to evidence of an ExxonMobil climate deception campaign

Newly disclosed internal ExxonMobil documents from Massachusetts' lawsuit reveal the company's own scientists expressed doubts about its promoted climate solutions, including biofuels and carbon capture, as early as the 1980s. The memo by Frank Sprow warned that global consensus on greenhouse gas action would severely impact Exxon, adding to evidence of a long-running climate deception campaign.

Background

Massachusetts has been suing ExxonMobil since 2019 for climate-related damages, and the case is now before the US Supreme Court. These internal documents add to a growing body of evidence that fossil fuel companies privately understood climate risks while publicly downplaying them.
