KDE developer Eike Hein has launched Kwi, a new terminal emulator built on Ghostty's libghostty-vt, GPU-accelerated Qt Scene Graph rendering, and Kirigami-based UI. Positioned as a modern, streamlined alternative to the long-standing Konsole, Kwi follows the latest KDE HIG while integrating mature KDE Frameworks like KPty.
Background
Konsole has been KDE's default terminal emulator for many years, but its architecture relies on older Qt technology. The release of Ghostty has inspired interest in building a modern, GPU-accelerated terminal experience for Linux desktops.
