Licube wants to be the fuel provider to the fusion power industry — see how at TechCrunch Disrupt

Licube is a startup licensed from Hirosaki University to purify lithium-6, the isotope needed by fusion reactors to breed tritium fuel on-site. With fusion power showing promise but tritium being extremely rare in nature, Licube aims to address a critical fuel supply bottleneck by separating the more effective lithium-6 isotope from natural lithium. The technology could be showcased at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026.

Background

Nuclear fusion is widely seen as the future of clean energy, with multiple startups and national projects racing toward commercial viability. Tritium fuel supply remains one of the key engineering and logistical challenges facing the fusion industry.
