Linus Torvalds Working On A Hefty Linux Kernel Improvement With Claude Code

Linus Torvalds has created a new Linux kernel branch named 'noref-filemap-read-with-llm' to address contention issues when multiple threads perform small reads from the page cache by eliminating folio reference counting. He publicly confirmed using Claude Code to help develop the code, test programs, and draft the initial patch documentation.

Background

Linus Torvalds has previously used AI tools like Google's Antigravity for kernel debugging and has acknowledged AI as a useful development tool. This marks his public use of Claude Code for a substantive kernel feature branch.
