MacSurf is a modern web browser being developed for Classic Mac OS 9 on PowerPC hardware, featuring CSS3, ES5 JavaScript, and native HTTPS support. While still in early alpha, it represents a significant technical achievement in bringing modern web capabilities to 25-year-old hardware. The project faces challenges with performance on 233 MHz G3 processors and compatibility with modern web applications.
Background
Classic Mac OS 9 was discontinued in 2002, making modern web browsing on such systems extremely challenging due to lack of security updates and modern web standards support. The project builds upon NetSurf, an open-source web browser designed to be lightweight and portable across different platforms.
