Kaspersky Securelist researchers discovered the first Android malware specifically targeting automotive head unit firmware in June 2026. The malware, distributed through a legitimate app called TWCore, installs silently without user interface and uses a multi-stage infection chain involving a JarService dropper, loader, and clicker/reverse proxy components.
Background
Automotive head units are increasingly running Android-based operating systems, making them potential targets for mobile malware. This represents the first known case of Android malware specifically designed to target vehicle infotainment systems.
