Mercedes adds steer-by-wire — and a dang steering yoke — to the EQS

Mercedes-Benz is introducing steer-by-wire technology in its refreshed EQS sedan, replacing traditional mechanical steering with an electronic system. This marks the brand's first adoption of the technology, which uses servos and actuators to control wheel direction based on driver inputs. The system also includes a steering yoke instead of a conventional wheel.

Background

Steer-by-wire technology eliminates mechanical linkages between steering wheel and wheels, using electronic signals instead. This technology has been primarily used in aviation and is now gradually entering production vehicles.
