New undersea cable cutter risks Internet’s backbone

A Chinese research vessel has successfully tested a deep-sea cable-cutting device at depths up to 3,500 meters, raising significant concerns about the vulnerability of global internet infrastructure. This dual-use technology, developed by both military and civilian organizations, coincides with a rise in suspected sabotage incidents targeting undersea cables worldwide. The capability to sever critical communications cables poses a direct threat to the backbone of international data transmission.

Background

Undersea cables carry over 95% of international data traffic and are critical infrastructure for global communications. Recent years have seen increased incidents of cable damage and growing geopolitical tensions around these vulnerabilities.
