Pokémon Go players unwittingly contributed to tech with military drone uses

Pokémon Go players' location data and images, collected during gameplay, have been used by Niantic Spatial to develop AI models for navigation in delivery robots and potentially military drones. The data, including billions of real-world images captured by millions of players, was used to train large geospatial models before Niantic spun off its spatial computing division. This raises privacy and ethical concerns about the secondary use of user-generated data originally collected for gaming purposes.

Background

Pokémon Go, launched in 2016, is an augmented reality mobile game that uses real-world locations to encourage players to explore their surroundings and capture virtual creatures. The game's popularity led to the collection of vast amounts of geolocated image data from players worldwide.
