Saving another 100TB of RAM with math (and Rust)

Cloudflare engineers reduced the memory footprint of their Pingora Backend Router by optimizing the consistent hashing algorithm used for load balancing. The improvements allowed them to reclaim over 100TB of RAM globally, building on a similar 100TB saved by the DNS team the previous month. The fix combined mathematical optimizations with Rust-level implementation improvements.

Background

Cloudflare operates a massive global infrastructure with petabytes of RAM across thousands of servers worldwide, making even small per-node optimizations economically significant at scale.
