Scientists develop new method for deciphering ancient scrolls

Researchers validated a screening method to identify which Herculaneum scrolls were written in lead-based ink by charring modern model papyri alongside the originals. This advances the Vesuvius Challenge's efforts to decipher the fragile 2,000-year-old scrolls using digital unwrapping and crowdsourced machine learning.

Background

The Herculaneum scrolls were carbonized by the 79 AD Vesuvius eruption, preserving over 600 papyrus scrolls that were long considered unreadable due to extreme fragility. The Vesuvius Challenge is a crowdsourced initiative using CT scanning and ML to virtually unwrap and read these ancient texts.
