Speeding up the Unreal editor by… not using unnecessarily secure hash methods

The author profiled the Unreal Editor launch and discovered that SHA1—a slow, cryptographically secure hash—is being used during shader map compilation. Replacing it with a faster, non-cryptographic hash could meaningfully reduce editor startup times by skipping unnecessarily expensive hashing overhead.

Background

Shader compilation is one of the most time-consuming steps during Unreal Editor startup. The author is known for finding overlooked optimization opportunities in the editor's profiling data rather than focusing on already-optimized paths like shader compilation itself.
