Steam Frame: The Ars Technica review

Valve is releasing the $1,059 Steam Frame standalone VR headset in 2026, marking a surprising return to the VR hardware market after years of neglect. The Ars Technica review calls it simultaneously overengineered and underbaked, noting its lightweight 440g design and comfort improvements over competitors like the Meta Quest 3.

Background

Valve previously dominated PC VR with the HTC Vive partnership and Index headset, but ceded the standalone VR market to Meta's Quest line throughout the 2020s. The Steam Frame represents Valve's long-awaited entry into the standalone VR headset space.
